Basic Computer Troubleshooting

TROUBLESHOOT COMMON COMPUTER PROBLEMS 

 

Computer/Monitor will not come on:

       q       CPU power cord plugged into the outlet and the CPU

        q       Monitor power cord plugged into the outlet and the monitor

q       Monitor cable plugged into the CPU and making a good connection

q       Surge protector plugged in and turned on

q       The brightness and contrast buttons are where they should be

q       LAPTOPS – check adaptor and/or pop out battery and replace (sometimes works)

 

 

Mouse/keyboard problems:

q       Check to see if the mouse is plugged tightly into the keyboard or CPU

q       Check to see if the keyboard is plugged correctly into the computer

q       Clean the mouse ball and rollers (if it is not an optical)

 

 

Printer problems: - network printers

q  No job to display comes up when you enter your print security code

o   Is your print password correct

o   How are you logged on to your computer – under whose network user name was the job sent?

o   Did you send it to the correct print device

o   Did you say ok to the print assistant screen

o   Did you wait long enough for the job to get sent

o   Is there paper in the tray you selected

o   Is there a message on the printer – flashing – i.e. change of paper (labels)

q  AS-400 Printjob –

o   Is the AS400 print session up and running

o   Is there a message (hit escape) and use option 7 – answer message

 

 

Frozen screen:

      q  Check to see if the mouse is plugged into the keyboard

      q  Check to see if the keyboard is plugged into the computer

      q  Try control-alt-delete to end the job or restart the computer

      q  Try holding the on/off switch in until it shuts down or unplug the CPU then restart

 

 

Network problems:

q       Network cable plugged into the wall jack and the CPU and making a good connection

q        Is the correct domain server selected – Orangenet or Orangejr    

q       User logging on correctly – user name and password

 

Note:  Before calling for support or creating a Help Desk Ticket – shut down all programs – turn your computer off – wait 30 seconds - restart. If you computer is frozen, press and hold the power button until the computer shuts down - wait 30 seconds - turn computer back on.
